Analog ARP Odyssey MkII Big Sound

I just had my ARP Odyssey completely refurbished, its like new and I am very happy to have it working properly in the studio. I bought this one in the 1980's using it when I was gigging. Korg is making a copy of the ARP Odyssey and I think Behringer has their version of the Odyssey. They dont come close to the orginal! Check us out: Binary Recording Studio

Hard drive for your session?

I often get reqest for recording sessions files from years ago from bands ( like from the 1990's) We have now asked bands to bring a hard drive to their session so we can give them all the files as another backup of their project. We have been recording bands and projects for over 30 years so it is recommended to make sure you have those files. We keep files for years but hard to for decades due to storage advancements. TTL patchbay, Binary Recording Studio

The patchbay is something you use every time you record with little recognition. It is the brain center for everything you do. How it is put together and the quality of the patchbay allows better work flow. At Binary we have a TTL patchbay which stands for Tiny Telephone Line. These were first used to make Telephone connections. One of the advantage of the TTL patchbay is size, more patches per rack size. 48 input/output per 1 inch rack. SSL Fusion at Binary Recording Studio

We were given the Solid State Logic Fusion processor by a great friend of the Studio.  This device adds some amazing color / tone to a 2 mix or individual stems.  Looking forward to using this on some of our mixes.  Binary Recording Studio

Vocal Recording, Binary Recording Studio

The other day I had a great singer in the studio with a very dynamic , loud vocal delivery.  I tried some of my great mics but he would distort the capsule of the mic every so often.   Ask him to back up on some of his parts and play the mic, no luck.

So the mic that ended up working for the session was the Shure SM7B Cardioid Dynamic.  I used a tube mic pre and let him rip.  The mic worked great for his style of singing.   Binary Recording Studio

Low noise Microphone. Neumann TLM 103 Binary Recoding Studio

We have been using this mic the Neumann TLM 103 for voice over / narration work.  This mic has also been requested by some of our big clients.

The reason is because of its low noise and flat eq.   The mic does not add any color either.

Mastering audio at Binary Recording Studio

Mastering is a high art!  It takes a special set of ears to put the final touches to a song / album / film.

Aside from the over all sound you need to be very aware of the levels.  We  do a lot of mastering for film / PBS, Discovery Channel, etc... which has very specific needs.

One of the software tools we use is Steinbergs Wavelab.  Recommended!
