Best tool in the Recording Studio

We now have some of the best audio tools to record and compose music. One of the tools we use everyday but never really talk about is our ears. What are your monitor levels while you are recording? We often spend hours in front of our studio monitors which creates ear fatigue. An acoustically well treated room allows you to even turn down the volume to an average of 70db. But it is also safe to say and scientifically evident, that volumes above 90db are too loud and risky for your hearing in longer music production sessions. Check your monitoring levels! How to get color in your recording, Binary Recording Studio

 I use many different mic pre's when recording, solid state and tube pre's.  If your able try different mic pre's on a instrument before printing the track you will hear the differences.  At Binary Recording Studio we have many mic pre's for that reason alone.

 Always looking for the unique sound in the studio.  Used this mic the other day, it's the Bob Baker "The Price is Right". game show host mic.  Added to the Shure Sm57 on the snare drum, giving it a little bit of distortion and punch.   Binary Recording Studio

Vocal Recording, Binary Recording Studio

 The other day I had a great singer in the studio with a very dynamic , loud vocal delivery.  I tried some of my great mics but he would distort the capsule of the mic every so often.   Ask him to back up on some of his parts and play the mic, no luck.

So the mic that ended up working for the session was the Shure SM7B Cardioid Dynamic.  I used a tube mic pre and let him rip.  The mic worked great for his style of singing.   Binary Recording Studio

Low noise Microphone. Neumann TLM 103 Binary Recoding Studio

 We have been using this mic the Neumann TLM 103 for voice over / narration work.  This mic has also been requested by some of our big clients.

The reason is because of its low noise and flat eq.   The mic does not add any color either.

Mastering is a high art!  It takes a special set of ears to put the final touches to a song / album / film.

Aside from the over all sound you need to be very aware of the levels.  We  do a lot of mastering for film / PBS, Discovery Channel, etc... which has very specific needs.

One of the software tools we use is Steinbergs Wavelab.  Recommended!
